Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli presented Mary Beechey of Big Flats with a proclamation declaring Thursday, May 31, 2012 as "Mary Beechey Day in Chemung County" at a reception honoring Beechey for being selected as the 2012 NYS Senior Citizen of the Year. Beechey received the State award from Senator Tom O'Mara and Assemblyman Chris Friend at a ceremony held in Albany at the State Capitol on May 8th. Mrs. Beechey was among over 100 senior volunteers nominated from across the state. Beechey was selected as the 2011 Chemung County Senior Citizen of the Year and was nominated for the State award by the Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care. Beechey was recognized for her volunteer work with RSVP donating 3,863 hours of her time serving others. Mary began volunteering with Meals on Wheels in 1987 and has been very active in the volunteer community ever since. She transcribes books for the blind, is active with the Over-the-County Players performing skits at local senior homes and clubs and dresses as Samantha the Skunk for the Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Council teaching children the dangers of smoking. She also gives her time at the Free Community Kitchen, Near Westside Neighborhood, and Steele Memorial Library. Mary is described as a compassionate woman who has taught her children what it means to really be part of a community being quoted as saying, "It isn't enough to live alongside your neighbors-you need to have the courage to let your life become part of theirs, and vice-verse." She also wanted her children to want to help others and make the world a better place.Institute for Human Services
