(May 30, 2012) — Wouldn’t the world be a better place if no one was addicted to tobacco? Imagine a world free of the global tobacco epidemic that threatens the lives of one billion men, women and children during this century. That’s what World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, May 31st is all about. The American Lung Association joins the World Health Organization to observe World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, May 31. This year’s theme is “tobacco industry interference” and focuses on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry’s blatant and aggressive efforts to undermine the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the world’s first public health treaty. Right here in the United States Big Tobacco is trying to undermine the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) oversight of tobacco products. The tobacco industry is trying to carve out a sweetheart deal to exempt cigars – including those most popular with teens. This exemption would mean that the FDA could not require warning labels on cigar packaging, require cigars to be put behind the counters away from kids, or tell cigar manufacturers to take out candy-flavors that are appealing to youth. Please tell Congress No Sweetheart Deal for Cigars. Tobacco use is the one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the world, responsible for six million deaths globally and 443,000 deaths in America alone each year. Only when citizens in the U.S. and around the globe stand up can we counter the tobacco industry’s efforts to addict another generation of kids. The American Lung Association commemorates World No Tobacco Day by urging smokers to quit and by providing the tools and information needed to go tobacco-free for good! Our Freedom From Smoking® Online is a highly successful, self-paced program that’s available 24 hours a day, and provides the tools and support that can help women and men quit.
