Cassie Coombs Profession: Public Health Educator Employer: Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Community Partnership-Chemung County Health Department Hometown: Bath, NY Why did I choose this profession? I think that it is very important for people to have information so that they can make the best decision for themselves and their family. Also, many people may just not be aware that there are services available to them. What do I love most about my job? I really enjoy collaborating with the other organizations and agencies in the area. Since we have such a small staff it is nice to discuss potential programs with other partners and hear their ideas and suggestions. Also STTAC participates in an Annual Recognition Event and it is exciting to be able to recognize the people in the community for their hard work and dedication to the program. What was a pivotal moment in my career? My current position involves working with elected officials so I have had the opportunity to learn about politics. It has been an eye opening experience that has allowed me to learn about the political system and how important it is to not only know your representatives but communicate with them. What is the best advice I have received related to my field? I attended a media training session and the best advice was to talk in sound bites. This means saying one or two sentences that gets your point across. This way you do not overwhelm whoever you are speaking to, and they hear what you are saying. Why would I recommend someone to this field? What advice would you recommend to someone in your field or profession? I would recommend some public relations or media training. In public health it is important that the information reaches the community so it is helpful to be able to publicize and promote the event. When not working, I enjoy the following: I enjoy running, reading a book that makes me laugh, and taking pictures- especially black and white photos. I also have a German Shepherd who keeps me pretty busy.Steuben Rural Health Network
