Elmira, N.Y. — Trinity of Chemung County, a not-for-profit substance abuse and chemical dependency treatment and prevention agency, and the PROUD Coalition will be holding the Great American Smoke Out (GASO) starting at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 15. The goal of GASO is to encourage smokers to quit for a day and ultimately for good while raising awareness of the harmful effects of smoking. Those who trade in at least a half pack of cigarettes or tobacco will receive a free turkey just in time for Thanksgiving. The participants will also be required to take a pledge to remain smoke free for the entire day and perhaps for life. “This is the third annual GASO that Trinity has hosted, and we expect it to be our biggest event yet. With the considerate donations from local grocery stores, including Wegmans, Tops and Weis, as well as, the YWCA and The Knights of Columbus Elmira Council 229, we will have more turkeys to give away than ever before," said Christine Nightingale, Community Prevention Specialist at Trinity of Chemung County. GASO will be held at the intersection of Lake Street and Main Street in Elmira. For more information, call 607-737-5218 or visit
