CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness group gathered the community this weekend to celebrate tobacco free zones. The Chemung County Legislature passed a resolution last fall limiting smoking at local parks. People celebrated the milestone in Harris Hill Park Saturday, signing post cards that will be submitted to local government leaders. They also passed out free backpacks and tickets for rides at the nearby amusement park. Organizers said the purpose of the day is really to make people aware of the new policy. "It helps reduce second hand smoke exposure people can encounter when they're outside and also reduces social acceptability so the youth that are playing in the playgrounds don't see the adult smoking so it's kind of the adults are being role models for those kids,” said Cassie Coombs, Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coordinator. The other parks taking part in smoke-free zones are Park Station and Chemung County Fairgrounds. There are still designated areas where smoking is permitted.
